Makeup Labs Electricity and Magnetism

(updated December 31, 2008)

If you miss your regularly scheduled laboratory and need to schedule a time to make it up, there are several considerations to keep in mind.

1.    The number one rule is this -- it is much much easier for everyone if you make arrangements for a make-up lab in advance of missing your regular lab. As soon as it is clear that you might miss a lab you are obliged to contact Dr. Driscoll  (diana.driscoll at case dot edu) (by an e-mail with a cc to your TA) for confirmation of a slot as soon as possible to arrange a make-up. Make the subject line of the e-mail "PHxxx Makeup request" where xxx is the course you're taking (116, 122, or 124.) Waiting until the last day of labs to make arrangements may leave you out of luck (see item 3 below).  Students participating in athletic, artistic and other events throughout the semester should rearrange labs for the entire semester as early as possible, the schedules for such events are usually set well in advance. We will be liberal in allowing makeups for students who provide advance warning but if you ask for a makeup after the fact, we expect you to provide a formal excuse (doctor's note, email from the dean, etc.)

2.    If absolutely necessary, you can do one makeup lab at the end of the semester at 9:00 am on the first reading day. This is very tough though, since you must hand in all the lab material that same day. This will cut in half the time available for studying for final exams.

3.    Failure to make up even a single lab will result in a dramatic lowering of your lab grade (since there are only seven labs in the semester).

4.    When you contact the instructors to request a makeup lab, tell them which lab (course and section) you are switching FROM and which labs (course and section) you are able to switch TO. Please also provide a reason for your absence; you don't have to divulge any personal information, but we like to know if your absence is due, for example, to family issues, extracurricular activities, religious holidays, etc.

5.     As a courtesy to your lab partner, when you know you will miss a lab, try to contact him or her so that she or he doesn't waste precious time waiting for you to arrive.

6.     Your temporary TA may tell you to do things one way, but your regular TA, who will still grade your work, may grade on a different basis. We cannot fix such problems, you will simply have to suffer the consequences.
